Meet Arrow - Search and Rescue Dog
Arrow is a Dutch Shepherd. Dutchies are known as a lively, athletic, alert and intelligent breed and Arrow fits all of these.
She was trained in Bozeman, Montana and is currently SARDUS certified (Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States).
Her handler, Shilah, and Arrow are constant companions and training is continual.
She is specifically trained in Area Search, also known as an air-scent dog.
This means she is able to locate a person in a large, remote area by the scent in the air.
Air-scent dogs work off-leash and range across large areas.
They are usually non-scent-discriminating and don't need a sample of the person's scent.
They look for a "cone" of scent where it's most concentrated.
When they find the scent, they'll "alert" their handler by returning to them and indicating that they've found human scent.
They'll then lead their handler to the person.
